As an Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon working in the private sector, my work load includes aesthetic procedures such as face Lift, rhinoplasties, breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast uplift, blepheroplasties, browlift, abdominoplasties, liposuction etc. To date I have performed over 4,000 aesthetic surgical procedures.
This locum appointment was designed for waiting initiative list, general Plastic Surgical workload including emergency trauma and burns in one of the largest dedicated burns unit of the country. I actively took part in teaching and administrative responsibilities of this university hospital. My primary task was to carry out independent aesthetic procedures. These included breast reduction, breast augmentation, and correction of breast asymmetries, rhinoplasties and dedicated hand trauma sessions.
Working in this large unit under six consultants, I completed five years of RITA certified training as a Specialist Registrar. I gained extensive experience in aesthetic, burns, and reconstructive procedures. I also obtained experience in free tissue transfer for reconstructive breast surgery, compound fractures of limbs and oro-facial malignancies. My special area of interest was perforator based local flaps for soft tissue cover of compound limb fractures. I carried out highly scientific research and study of related vascular anatomy and presented my work at national and international levels. This unit has active ITU facilities for burns and skin lab equipped with dedicated staff and facilities for skin culture. As a trainee I was actively involved in research and teaching.
Guy’s Hospital has an active paediatric plastic unit with cleft lip, cleft palate repair and pharyngoplasty forming the main workload. The combined clinics’ sessions were held in collaboration with other related specialties. St Thomas’ Hospital has a variety of emergency and elective general and aesthetic plastic surgical work load. I also participated in the regular journal club meetings. I also collected and set up a data base of the outcome of Pharyngoplasties for velopharyngeal incompetence. The work was accepted for Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’s meeting in Penang, Malaysia.
Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children at Crumlin is the largest paediatric hospital in Ireland with an active plastic and reconstructive unit. This is a tertiary referral centre catering for the entire country. As a registrar at Crumlin Hospital I had considerable experience in acute paediatric burn management along with paediatric limb and digital replantation and cleft surgery. In addition I was on call for St James’ Hospital in Dublin, which is a tertiary referral centre for acute limb, facial and burn trauma with dedicated elective aesthetic workload.
Working at this hospital, I had ample opportunities to assist and perform routine general surgical procedures.
Cork has an active burn unit, which is a tertiary referral centre. I gained experience in active burn resuscitation, early excision and grafting and with management and rehabilitation of burn, hand and faciomaxillary trauma. I also had an opportunity to actively assist in replantation and free flap procedures. I was also involved in general plastic elective procedures as appropriate. I was an active participant and routine in Journal club meetings, case conferences and other academic activities.

The surgical unit of the Mercy Hospital treats surgical and urological emergencies as well as acute trauma.
