Mr Umar D Khan
I have been working exclusively in the private sector for ten years and have performed more than 7000 aesthetic surgical procedures to date. I have built an enviable reputation with both my clients and peers within the field of aesthetic and plastic surgery. I have pioneered the new muscle splitting breast augmentation technique, which was published just three years ago, and which has now been adopted world-wide by cosmetic and aesthetic surgeons in this field. A video explaining the technique can be seen on YouTube.
Having resolved to pursue a career in plastic surgery, I went to Ireland to train towards a Fellowship in General Surgery and gain experience in Plastic Reconstructive surgery. An opportunity subsequently presented itself in England, which I took and obtained further training in Plastic Surgery as a Specialist Registrar. After completing five years of training at specialist registrar level, I had an opportunity to work in National Health Trust and gained experience in aesthetic plastic surgical procedures. I later chose to work in the private sector. As an aesthetic plastic surgeon working in the private sector, my work load includes aesthetic procedures such as face lift, rhinoplasties, breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast uplift, blepheroplasties, browlift, abdominoplasties, liposuction etc. Active participation and presentations form an integral part of the career as an aesthetic and plastic surgeon, and I am currently a peer reviewer of many prestigious plastic surgery journals. A list of my publications can be found on NCBI. My articles have appeared in publications including Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal, and the European Journal of Plastic Surgery.

As an Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon working in the private sector, my work load includes aesthetic procedures such as face Lift, rhinoplasties, breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast uplift, blepheroplasties, browlift, abdominoplasties, liposuction etc. To date I have performed over 4,000 aesthetic surgical procedures.
This locum appointment was designed for waiting initiative list, general Plastic Surgical workload including emergency trauma and burns in one of the largest dedicated burns unit of the country. I actively took part in teaching and administrative responsibilities of this university hospital. My primary task was to carry out independent aesthetic procedures. These included breast reduction, breast augmentation, and correction of breast asymmetries, rhinoplasties and dedicated hand trauma sessions.
Working in this large unit under six consultants, I completed five years of RITA certified training as a Specialist Registrar. I gained extensive experience in aesthetic, burns, and reconstructive procedures. I also obtained experience in free tissue transfer for reconstructive breast surgery, compound fractures of limbs and oro-facial malignancies. My special area of interest was perforator based local flaps for soft tissue cover of compound limb fractures. I carried out highly scientific research and study of related vascular anatomy and presented my work at national and international levels. This unit has active ITU facilities for burns and skin lab equipped with dedicated staff and facilities for skin culture. As a trainee I was actively involved in research and teaching.
Guy’s Hospital has an active paediatric plastic unit with cleft lip, cleft palate repair and pharyngoplasty forming the main workload. The combined clinics’ sessions were held in collaboration with other related specialties. St Thomas’ Hospital has a variety of emergency and elective general and aesthetic plastic surgical work load. I also participated in the regular journal club meetings. I also collected and set up a data base of the outcome of Pharyngoplasties for velopharyngeal incompetence. The work was accepted for Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’s meeting in Penang, Malaysia.
Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children at Crumlin is the largest paediatric hospital in Ireland with an active plastic and reconstructive unit. This is a tertiary referral centre catering for the entire country. As a registrar at Crumlin Hospital I had considerable experience in acute paediatric burn management along with paediatric limb and digital replantation and cleft surgery. In addition I was on call for St James’ Hospital in Dublin, which is a tertiary referral centre for acute limb, facial and burn trauma with dedicated elective aesthetic workload.
Working at this hospital, I had ample opportunities to assist and perform routine general surgical procedures.
Cork has an active burn unit, which is a tertiary referral centre. I gained experience in active burn resuscitation, early excision and grafting and with management and rehabilitation of burn, hand and faciomaxillary trauma. I also had an opportunity to actively assist in replantation and free flap procedures. I was also involved in general plastic elective procedures as appropriate. I was an active participant and routine in Journal club meetings, case conferences and other academic activities.

The surgical unit of the Mercy Hospital treats surgical and urological emergencies as well as acute trauma. In this position I have been responsible for the preoperative and postoperative management of both elective and emergency surgical patients, including ICU management. I have assisted a broad spectrum of surgical and urological operations, including laparoscopic procedures, endoscopies, colonscopies, cystoscopies, exploratory and therapeutic laparotomies, vascular procedures, etc.
This job involved working at the major trauma centre of the south of Ireland, dealing with all categories of emergency situations, including traffic accidents, burns, facial trauma, head injuries, hand trauma and has one of the highest number of A and E attendance in Ireland.
Working as a Registrar in plastic surgery unit at this hospital I had the opportunity of dealing with acute burns injuries. I also got involved with hand and facial congenital deformities, head, neck and oral malignancies.
